A brazen daylight robbery in Tokyo's Ueno district saw thieves make off with millions in cash. Travelers should be aware of potential risks when carrying large sums of money in transit.
A group of currency exchangers were robbed of 420 million yen ($2.7M USD) in Tokyo's Ueno district while loading suitcases of cash into a car. The robbers used pepper spray before fleeing. The victims were planning to fly the cash to Hong Kong.
In a separate incident at Haneda Airport, a currency speculator was attacked in a parking lot in an attempt to steal 190 million yen. The victim resisted, and the attackers fled. A similar robbery occurred in Hong Kong involving Japanese men carrying 58 million yen.
Japanese and Hong Kong police are investigating possible connections between the incidents. Travelers should exercise extreme caution when transporting large amounts of cash and consider using secure methods for currency exchange.
