Foreign tourists can now ride the Kyushu Shinkansen for free, thanks to a new initiative by the Kagoshima government. This aims to boost tourism in the region, offering a 90-minute ride from Hakata to Kagoshima Chuo.
Kagoshima Prefecture is offering free one-way Shinkansen tickets from Hakata Station to Kagoshima Chuo Station to encourage more foreign visitors. This initiative addresses slumping tourism numbers and reduced direct flights to Kagoshima Airport.
Initially, the free tickets will be available to travelers from Korea, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. Plans are in place to expand the offer to include tourists from the U.S., Thailand, and other countries.
This means significant savings for travelers exploring Kyushu, with the government subsidizing the approximately ¥11,500 (US$75) ticket cost. Details on how to apply for the free tickets will be released soon.
